Important resources for solopreneurs

Part of the fun of being a solopreneur is being able to call all the shots. Part of the challenge is keeping it all together, and moving so that you can actually create a business that is self-sufficient and financially viable.

Think of it as creating an operating system for the way you think and develop your venture so that you’re making progress every day - even just a little bit.

Planning

It helps to start with a basic outline that you can expand as your idea develops. Many people find the Lean Canvas approach to be super helpful. While putting things in boxes takes effort, it is time well spent, especially as you think through product-market fit, systems development and how you create a revenue generating business.

It can also be helpful to brainstorm ideas and opportunities. Many of us use Notion with Notion AI as it is able to connect with cloud based resources creating an orchestrating agent that helps keep things moving.

Building

Most people today will be vibe coding their applications. It has become popular to use tools like Lovable, Replit, Base44 because they manage the end-to-end design to deploy cycle. These are a great way to start, but once your business gets going, costs can add up very quickly.

If you’ve evaluated your product-market fit, and you’re confident you’re going to need to scale up within 6 months it is better to choose platforms that can scale with you effectively. Solutions like Google AI Studio and Red Hat’s OpenShift platform provide free tiers that make it possible to start small but know you have the support and systems to scale up to handle large customer volumes. A major benefit of the OpenShift platform is the ability to access open source and frontier models through their unified AI model catalogue. This gives solopreneurs the ability to select the right model for the task, and have better control over costs.

Marketing

Nothing beats getting a marketing or branding expert to help you think through how you develop your identity and go-to-market. A big mistake many solopreneurs make is not thinking about how to get the product into paying customers’ hands.

While you’re in the early stages, tools like Claude Design and Figma are super useful in creating the required artwork. Hosting a website is often the first cost that founders incur. Good news - Cloudflare Pages is free for your first project. Using a frontier model you can quickly generate your website and have it hosted with a little configuration. It even has authentication capabilities so you can create gated sections of your website.

And another thing - aggressively acquire customers. As the case study illustrates, Stripe from its inception focused on acquiring customers. With that focus they discovered first hand what pain-point customers experienced, and they used that to create features that customers would talk about. Genius.

Customer support

Often left to last, thinking about how you support your customer onboarding and using your product are essential for experiences that create advocates. The temptation is to put an AI chatbot and get it to handle the support process for you. While practical, it misses a key input in the product development process. Understanding customer needs and where value is being created is vital to creating a product that sells itself. Manning that support desk for the first few months gives remarkable insight and can often spur features that are in high demand. Man that live chat on your product and reap the benefits.

Mentoring and support networks

Entrepreneurship is not an easy journey and it can be a daunting task. At times, you may begin to feel like you are becoming exhausted mentally. Having a support network around you, hanging out in spaces where other start-ups are developing helps keep you going. In Auckland there is GridAKL, in Wellington there is Creative HQ and in Christchurch there is Ministry of Awesome. We’re partnered with all these organisations and we can introduce you to them.

Happy solopreneuring!
